The gap between the highest price a buyer will pay and the lowest a seller will accept. It is the immediate cost of entering and exiting a position.
A wide spread is a liquidity warning that does not show up in the headline price. On a pair with a 2% spread, a round trip costs 2% before any price movement, which quietly swamps most short-term trading edges.
