Drawdown
The decline from a peak to a subsequent low, expressed as a percentage. Maximum drawdown is the largest such decline over a period.
Drawdown matters more than average return for anyone who might need to sell at a bad moment. An asset that returns 40% a year with an 80% drawdown along the way is a very different instrument from one that returns 40% smoothly, even though the annual figure is identical.
