A base blockchain that settles its own transactions and provides its own security, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana.
Layer 1s compete on a trade-off between decentralisation, throughput, and cost that no design has escaped. Comparing their transactions-per-second figures without the accompanying validator counts and hardware requirements compares nothing useful.
