Mempool
The set of transactions that have been broadcast to a network but not yet included in a block.
A queue, and like any queue its length is the clearest available measure of congestion. When the mempool grows, the fee required to be included in the next block rises, because block space is auctioned rather than rationed. Measured in virtual bytes rather than transaction count, since a transaction's claim on block space depends on its size.
