MakerDAO created DAI, the world's largest decentralized stablecoin, maintained by the MKR governance system. Users lock collateral (ETH, WBTC, and other assets) into Maker Vaults and generate DAI against it. The $1 peg is maintained algorithmically through stability fees, liquidation mechanisms, and DAI Savings Rate (DSR). MKR tokens are burned when vault fees are paid, creating deflationary pressure. In 2024, MakerDAO rebranded to Sky Protocol, introducing SKY (replacing MKR) and USDS (replacing DAI) as part of an "Endgame" restructuring.
